Diana contacted me for her maternity photos at the beach and I immediately suggest a couple favorite locations - Garrapata Beach or Pfeiffer Beach, both in Big Sur! We ended up going with Garrapata Beach and let me tell you, the Calle Lily Valley is a great spot for pregnancy photos even when the lillies aren’t in bloom. If you’re thinking about photography for a beach maternity session in Big Sur/Carmel/Monterey then you definitely need to see these ethereal photos!  One thing to know, when you get to Big Sur you never know what the weather will be, the microclimates mean that you could be in a sunny hot spot 10 minutes before you disappear into the deep fog. Well we definitely got the fog on this shoot, there was no trace of the sunset to be found - but not to worry! This actually makes for AMAZING lighting, giving everything that soft magical feel. Ethereal, glowy, dreamlike (I’m out of adjectives, you get the picture!) and on top of that, we can face in directions we normally can’t face due to the direction of the sun on a bright day. We started off on the cliffs above Garrapata Beach:

Next we continued our adventure descending into Calle Lily Valley. Photos here are very popular for Big Sur Maternity Photographers, but usually it’s during the blooming season when the whole area is covered in lillies. That’s a great time of course but this is a beautiful lush area year round and at this time of year, we’re the only one’s there and have the place to ourselves!

After getting absolutely breathtaking portraits on the cliffs above Calle Lily Valley, we headed down to the beach for sunset. Not much sunset since the dog was so dense but that doesn’t mean there aren’t magical photos to take! This entry is getting a little long so I’ll just put a couple.

This is what I love about photography, it’s not just the technical understanding but the creativity involved, the adaptability and unpredictability of subjects and environments - every time I take the camera out for a shoot it’s always a new experience. One thing stays the same though, I always get amazing pictures!
