Planning a maternity photo session in Big Sur? These beach sunset portraits might be just the inspiration you need. 

I recommended Garrapata Beach to Carla because they weren’t too far away and it’s one of my favorite places to shoot. It doesn’t get too busy and it has a wide variety of scenery, and when it comes to beautiful Big Sur coastline you just can’t beat it!  We started off a couple hours before sunset on the cliffs above the beach. I used my favorite manual focus lenses that capture a dreamy, organic feel.

The wind was pretty intense as it always is! I told her I could remove some flyaway hairs in editing, but that I actually prefer to see the hair blowing in the wind, it makes for a very dramatic scene! Next I had them head down to the beach since they were really after some Big Sur beach sunset photos. The baby bump was very prominent and I knew we would get some great silhouette shots, and lucky us there were no clouds or fog in sight! It was going to be a wonderful sunset! I got the vintage lens out that gives us lots of glorious lens flare and got some dramatic moments near the water. Carla had that beautiful glow, and both of them were so in love and happy to be there together. I knew there were going to be a lot of gorgeous shots, and we didn’t even hit golden hour yet!

Next I decided to get a little variety since we were near another area of the beach that I like. Calle Lilies weren’t in bloom at the moment but we decided to get some delicate shots near the entrance where the water had created a little scene for us.

Golden hour had finally started and it was time to get some ethereal sunset portraits! Maternity portraits at sunset are the perfect match, and when you get a place like Garrapata Beach and no fog - you know you are about to have truly magical photos. Here’s a few of the hundreds we took! When I do a Big Sur Maternity Shoot it always turns into an adventure, I leave the session with new friends and contentment in my heart. What a gift to not only get to take wonderful photos of these precious moments, but to get to spend my days working in my favorite place in the world. Until next time!
